Pisgah Pride Day 2019: 300 participants – 18 projects:

Install new entry sign at the Ranger Station

Built rock steps near top of Mr. Pisgah Trail – CMC


Rebuilt rock garden at the Ranger Station


Hauled heavy timbers (6”x6s) up John Rock Trail and build 3 puncheon bridges – BCHP helped stage timbers, CMC built puncheons

Cleaned up 3 miles of roadside trash – Trout Unlimited


Removed and treated 10,000 square feet of non-native invasive plant species


Conducted a training hike associated with identifying and locating threatened ash trees


Rebuilt a broken bridge at Moore Cove Trail 


Installed 22 signs at the entrances to wilderness trails and near Graveyard Fields alerting hikers to risks in the areas


Attacked a patch of non-native invasive kudzu


Conducted traditional trail maintenance work on 10 miles of trail in Bent Creek, Mills River, and Avery Creek


Installed fencing in selected spots on the Looking Glass Rock Trail - CMC


Trimmed trees, picked up trash and spruced up Looking Glass Falls area


Built a rock and mulch garden trail for a pollinator garden through what had been a grove of invasive privet plants at Sycamore Flats


Planted 100 native plants


Filled in mud hole on the Exercise Trail and built new elevated gravel path through low spot


Cleared culverts and ditches on 4 miles of Forest Service roads, and


Engaged in a river cleanup and educational project for 3rd graders on the Davidson River

The following groups were closely involved in this work day: Carolina Mountain Club, Pisgah Area SORBA, Trout Unlimited, Mountain True, Conserving Carolina, Fish & Wildlife Conservation Council. Southern Highlands Reserve, Backcountry Horsemen and the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards. We were generously supported by a number of corporate sponsors, including French Broad Stone, REI, Oskar Blues, Diamond Brand, Industry 9, Cane Creek, Vulcan Materials, Crank Coffee, and more.

Work done in the forest throughout the year in collaboration with other groups:

Moor Cove – CASP, USFS crib wall to fix blow-out

John Rock Trail – BCHP staged timbers, CMC built puncheon

Cantrell Creek Project completion – stream restoration, trail re-route, and trail decommissioning at Cantrell Creek, plus extensive work on S. Mills River Trail and Horse Cove
